Fall Porch DIY
As I mentioned in my intro post I love decorating for the seasons and fall is one of my absolute favourites (next to Christmas!). As soon as the first leaf falls I am out buying my pumpkins and haybales to do up my porch! I often get flack for it, but I do try to wait until the week the kids go to school (after Labour Day here in Canada).
There’s a few key ingredients to make your porch look put together and styled:
- Choose a mixture of all of the fall things to work with – pumpkins of different colours and sizes, mums of different colours and sizes, ornamental cabbage (my fav!), lanterns, wood, haybales, cornstalks, etc.
- Alter the height of everything by using your steps (if you have them) or placing things up on boxes, empty upside down planters, crates, etc so give height and dimension.
- Angle your pieces so they fill the space – rather than just sitting a planter or a pumpkin upright, sometimes I angle them forwards so it appears as though everything sort of cascades together. I don’t like seeing gaps!
- Don’t be afraid to guess and test! Try things and see how they look and if you don’t love it, pull it apart and start over! That is part of the fun 😉
If this is a bit much for you, keep it simple with some different sized pumpkins going up the steps and a few by the front door. The big mums are from Costco – by far the best place to find these big ones and they’re only $12.99! I’d love to say I went to a pumpkin patch and carefully picked out my pumpkins but the truth is I went to Zehrs, our local grocery store, when they first got them in and found everything I’d need there for much less $$! The white pumpkins were only $3.99, Cinderella pumpkins, rose and white pumpkins for $4.99! So good!
Then, I add some fun pillows, a cozy blanket, wreaths, a cute doormat (Hey There Pumpkin) and voila! I wish I could spend my days out here cozied up with a hot coffee. Let me know what you do with your porch in the comments – I’d love to know!
