His & Hers Home Offices

Well, we’ve been working at home for almost 8 months now. Crazy to think that 2 weeks of extended March Break turned into this! For some of you, you may have worked out of the home the whole time. For others, your spouse may have been back to work and you’ve been working at home. There are tons of different spousal dynamics happening throughout this pandemic, I’m sure! For us, we’ve both been home, and while that was nice while the kids were home so we could trade off in keeping them occupied, it’s also a long time in the same space with your partner!

I have an office on the main floor of our house that I’d already decorated the way I liked it. Somehow as work-from-home started, my hubby took over this space and I was working out of an upstairs bedroom! I’m not really sure how that happened to be honest, but I decided to take my space back and therefore had to do some room shifting in our house! We are lucky to have two bedrooms in our basement – one is my step-son’s and one is a spare room that my parents mostly use when they stay here, which was quite regularly before this pandemic hit.

So, I opted to move Audrey, my 13 year old step-daughter, downstairs to the spare room, and shifted the boys around upstairs to free up Bennett’s room (the smallest) to convert into a home office for Marc. Didn’t sound so bad in my mind but it sure ended up being a lot of work! Anyway, here we are – Marc has an efficient workspace and I have my office back!

I’m a colour girl through and through which you’ll see from my office. I thought I’d be fun to have a pop of colour off our main living area. The space is closed off by a French door but you can see the colour from our other spaces. I think it’s fun! The colour is called Bear Run by Dulux.

I added a fun rug from Wayfair, boho sheers with the cute tassel details and a white office chair from Homesense and a gallery wall. I used this space regularly when I worked my Stella & Dot business full time so admittedly, there is still a whole corner dedicated to storing my bags and jewelry! We’ll keep that out of these shots!

My desk and bookshelf are both from Jysk. I liked the beachy wood look and wanted a desk that wasn’t too big. The book shelf is very similar to Ikea’s (almost exactly the same actually) but I just liked this colour better! I needed storage so this cabinet is from Canadian Tire’s Canvas collection and has been a perfect size for what I need! On top you’ll see that window pane with our names on it – that is from our table seating chart made for our wedding and I just kept the middle section with our head table on it. My fiddle leaf fig tree is doing well too, so that makes me happy, as I don’t have much of a green thumb!

Enter Marc’s space – I tried to keep things more neutral up here and I’m not sure if I love it. Ha! I just usually have some sort of colour pallette so this grey, back, white is kind of blah to me. I wouldn’t be surprised if you saw me update this space further but for now it is fine and he seems to like it! It’s obviously a lot more masculine and minimalist and feels bright and airy which is nice.

The wall colour in this room is called Solitary Slate by Dulux. I ordered the desk, office chair and lamp from Wayfair, chair, side table rug, pillow, curtains picture shelf, pouf and other accents are from Homesense and the wall shelves (set of 3) and light fixture are from Amazon. I installed that baby all by myself, I’ll have you know! I love the pouf – I needed something to fill that space, but with a 2nd level home office, the only people who’ll be visiting him in there would be me or the kids!

I personalized the space for Marc by getting some prints done at Costco and framing them. The one larger print on the wall is of him walking with all 4 kids and I just think it’s the sweetest! The other two are our kids from our East Coast trip last summer – some of the best memories for us! He’s also a sentimental guy when it comes to his career journey so he has some letters framed from former bosses and colleagues on the picture shelf and a certificate framed from a course he took on the wall as well! Professional but polished!

His added touch with his new company logo in a decal on the wall and while I fought it at first, he really wanted this for the branding videos he does and Zoom calls with clients. Alas, I conceded and we installed it together with barely any swear words 😉 Scout thinks the rug is comfy too! My next step would be to add a little coffee bar in the back corner – a bar cart, Keurig and maybe even a mini fridge … we’ll see if I can get that together for Christmas!

So there you have it! Two complete work spaces in our home that suit each of us differently. What do you think? Are you working from home right now? Do you have a proper workspace? I know we could have made do with working at the dining room table but with both of us on the phone a lot, separate spaces were needed here for our own sanity! 🙂

Bye for now!

Love both looks Jodi (even the blah grey one 😉)! Marc made the right choice putting his logo up as it looks great behind him in his live videos. I love working from home and seeing all the things I love around the house so I think it’s important that people play around with their space and make it their own. It’s way more fun!

Our office space was used as a games room by the former owners, so we converted the wet bar into office storage (and even added electrical to the cabinets to hide printers and router inside). And yes, it does have a mini-fridge … AND a wine fridge 😉
